The management of Crewe Alexandra have today denied missing out on Cheltenham Town defender Gavin Caines. The centre-half has been quoted in various media outlets suggesting that he had rejected an offer from Crewe Alexandra before recently re-signing for Keith Downing's side.

Crewe made no such offer for the player, nor had commenced negotiations with the player or his representative. Crewe do have some more transfer targets in mind - but would like to go on record to say that Gavin Caines wasn't one of them.

Assistant Manager Neil Baker told us: "I don't really know where these quotes have come from because they are simply not true. We have never spoken to Gavin Caines and we did certainly not make him offer.

"He has re-signed for Cheltenham which is his prerogative and I don't really understand why we have been mentioned because we never made him or his agent any sort offer, let alone been turned down."
