Crewe Alexandra's season will rest on our final home game of the season against Oldham Athletic next weekend. The Railwaymen still need a point to be safe from relegation after a single goal from youngster Sam Vokes on 55 minutes decided this nail biter at the Fitness First Stadium.

Vokes, a January transfer for Crewe Alexandra, raced cleared of the Alex defence to fire a priceless goal past Ben Williams. It secured Bournemouth's sixth successive win and still gives them a chance of pulling off one of the greatest escapes ever.

Crewe have concerns of their own though and now need to show some real mental strength to secure the point we still need to be certain of survival.

With first choice left back Billy Jones being unable to play due to personal reasons, Steve Holland has been forced to make changes at the back. Centre back Danny O'Donnell was recalled into the back four with Chris McCready moving to right back. George Abbey switched across to left back.

Joe Anyinsah was replaced by the on-loan Dean Morgan. The on-loan Preston winger moved was not included in the match day squad as Neil Cox and Byron Moore were recalled to the squad.

In bright sunshine and a wonderful atmosphere, Crewe forced the first corner of the afternoon but it was well claimed by David Forde. At the other end of the pitch a Maxi Gradel cross had to be gathered at the second attempt by Ben Williams, as the home side tried to grab the initiative.

After just eight minutes of play a dangerous looking cross from Shaun Cooper was flicked on by his own player Danny Hollands, just as Sam Vokes tried to make an advance at the far post. Moments later, Crewe had to rely on Daniel O'Donnell being in the right place at the right time to hook a Gradel cross away from danger, after the tricky winger had evaded the intentions of Abbey.

The first real effort on goal duly arrived on 15 minutes. A fine passing move from the home side saw the full-back Warren Cummings deliver an accurate cross for the well placed Cooper, but he could only direct his header straight at Ben Williams. A minute later, Vokes poked a Gradel cross over the Alex bar.

It was certainly Bournemouth making the early impression and captain Julien Baudet bravely halted Jo Kuffour in his tracks after a superb interchange of passing with Vokes. The Frenchman was forced to whack it behind for a corner.

Maynard's first real attempt on goal didn't materialise until the half and hour mark and when it did, he dragged his shot harmlessly wide of the mark after receiving possession from an Abbey throw. Crewe were finding difficult to create a chance of any real substance.

Crewe had their agile goalkeeper Ben Williams to thank on 34 minutes when another impressive run from Maxi Gradel caused chaos again in the Alex defence. The pacy winger, who had only return from a family be left both Lunt and Schumacher in his wake before shooting low towards goal. His goal bound effort forced Williams to parry it out into his 6-yard box.

Just as Kuffour looked to be ready to apply the finishing touch, O'Donnell intercepted superbly but his clearance fell invitingly to Shaun Cooper who must have thought he had scored with an empty net to shoot at. Amazingly, Williams had returned to his feet to retreat and push it behind for a corner. It was another breathtaking save from the Alex number one.

With the half of few real chances drawing to a close, a late corner from Kenny Lunt was headed over by Baudet but Crewe efforts on goal were few and far between.

Crewe's first venture in the second half nearly saw a half chance drop at the feet of Tom Pope. After some industrious work from Maynard up against Cummings, a McCready cross was met originally by Pope but then the forward lost the ball in flight as it bounced into the hands of the Cherries keeper David Forde.

At the other end, a burst forward from the England International Darren Anderton was straight at the well-positioned Ben Williams.

It didn't take the home side too much longer to score the opening goal. Ten minutes into the second half, Vokes broke clear from a flick-on that may have inadvertently come from the head of O'Donnell and the young Welsh Under-21 International kept his composure to fire past Ben Williams. Obviously that was a cue for a mass celebration inside a packed Fitness First Stadium. Crewe now had to dig in and find some resolve of their own.

It almost arrived immediately, with George Abbey forcing a fine save from David Forde. Our Nigerian defender lashed a shot 25-yard, which the Bournemouth keeper could only palm away.

On 58 minutes, Crewe lost their skipper Baudet through injury. The Frenchman had been struggling in the second period and appeared injured when Vokes had raced through to score. He was unable to continue and had to replaced by Mark Carrington. Chris McCready moved back into the centre of the defence with Gary Roberts filling in at right back.

Crewe did have ball in the net on 60 minutes. Nicky Maynard finished off the move from close range but in the build up, substitute Carrington had been penalised for handball. The Alex midfielder had arrived late into the box to reach Dean Morgan's cross and after Maynard had applied the finish, the Alex certainly protested the decision and the referee's assistant never raised his flag. The referee stood by his decision.

The Alex then had to survive two hairy moments. A probing run from Maxi Gradel resulted in his low cross missing all the runners. Moments later, Kuffour was rather unfortunate not to quite reach a searching cross from Anderton.

With 15 minutes remaining, Crewe played their last hand with Steve Jones coming on for Schumacher. Crewe desperately needed a goal and were going with virtually four up front. Jones' first involvement saw him draw a yellow card offence from Lee Bradbury.

With just over ten minutes remaining, Kuffour tried to double the home side's advantage with an outrageous overhead kick. The former Arsenal youngster just couldn't keep his effort down to really test Ben Williams in the Alex goal.

With time ticking away, Maxi Gradel again shot straight at Williams. Moments later, Dean Morgan did the same at the other end. His fierce shot from 25 yards was pushed away by Forde for another corner. Crewe couldn't make anything of it.

It proved to our last real chance of the afternoon, as Bournemouth held on to secure a vital win. The final whistle brought relief and a mass pitch invasion from the home fans. Because of the mass number of supporters on the pitch, the refereee blew early.
