We Are Annoyed With The Goal We Conceded
Crewe Alexandra's first team coach Steve Holland was left hugely disappointed after the Railwaymen failed to pick up the point we needed to make sure of survival. Sam Vokes grabbed the only goal of the game ten minutes into the second half to keep Crewe still very much in the mix at the bottom of League One.
Holland was understandably annoyed with the goal the Alex conceded. A long ball up the pitch that Daniel O'Donnell inadvertently headed into the young striker's path undid us.
After the final whistle, Holland told the club's official web-site: "We are frustrated and disappointed that we didn't get the point we needed. It hasn't worked out like that for us today and all we can do is dust ourselves off and prepare for next week.
"Our fate is still in our own hands and that is what we wanted going into the last few games of the season. We need a point and that is what we have to get minimum next week to be sure of safety.
"I thought we started well and were playing with great composure. We restricted them to just a handful of chances and that was pleasing. They had just the one really good chance in the first half when Ben Williams made a really good save. At half time we told them that we were not doing enough ourselves to create chances and we wanted to improve upon on that.
"I thought we were defending well and Julien was on top of his game before he got injured. Then it was just a long ball up the pitch and their striker is one-on-one with our goalkeeper. Danny (O'Donnell) has made a poor mistake and Vokes took his goal very well, but we are annoyed with the goal we conceded today. We had been on to the players that those type of mistakes can decide games and it has decided this one.
"We had a few chances ourselves. George Abbey and Dean Morgan forced their goalkeeper into saves."
He added: Julien has a knee injury and that is a concern for us. We have had a little mini-crisis with our defenders at the moment. Billy Jones's partner went into labour, and Danny Woodards was unable to train fully yesterday.
"We then lost Julien, so we had to move Chris back into the centre and use Gary Roberts at right-back. We will have to see who is fit next week before deciding on our selection."
